What is sanctification?
Exodus 40:9 And thou shalt take the anointing oil, and anoint the tabernacle, and all that is therein, and shalt hallow it, and all the vessels thereof: and it shall be holy.
Sanctification is the process by which an object is marked for use by God. In the tabernacle the furniture and utensils were sprinkled in blood thereby marking them as sanctified for God’s use. They were no longer common objects. They were declared by God to be holy. That is sanctification, they were marked for the use by God. This was a type, or a picture of what the Lord Jesus Christ would do with the shedding of His blood.
Isaiah 52:15 So shall he sprinkle many nations; the kings shall shut their mouths at him: for that which had not been told them shall they see; and that which they had not heard shall they consider.
We can see that many nations, meaning people of every kindred and tribe and tongue and nation, would be sprinkled in His blood. They were sanctified, they were marked in blood as the property of God. They were declared to be holy in this process.
Hebrews 10:10 By the which will we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.
This process of sanctification occurred, once for all and was purposed at one time in the body of Jesus when He offered Himself as a sacrifice to God. There are not individual sanctifications in regards to this moment of sanctification. There is another point where we are marked, though not with blood.
2 Thessalonians 2:13 But we are bound to give thanks alway to God for you, brethren beloved of the Lord, because God hath from the beginning chosen you to salvation through sanctification of the Spirit and belief of the truth:
Here we are sanctified by the Spirit, and also by belief of the truth.
As Christians or followers of Christ, what sets us apart from the world? It is that shed blood of Christ, it is that indwelling of the Holy Spirit, and it is the belief of the truth. All these sanctify us, or set us apart as God’s from those who are not blessed with these spiritual blessings.
