Romans 1:9 For God is my witness, whom I serve with my spirit in the gospel of his Son, that without ceasing I make mention of you always in my prayers; 10 Making request, if by any means now at length I might have a prosperous journey by the will of God to come unto you. 11 For I long to see you, that I may impart unto you some spiritual gift, to the end ye may be established; 12 That is, that I may be comforted together with you by the mutual faith both of you and me. 13 Now I would not have you ignorant, brethren, that oftentimes I purposed to come unto you, (but was let hitherto,) that I might have some fruit among you also, even as among other Gentiles. 14 I am debtor both to the Greeks, and to the Barbarians; both to the wise, and to the unwise. 15 So, as much as in me is, I am ready to preach the gospel to you that are at Rome also.
Paul saw his meaning in life as his service to the gospel of the Son of God. It was his passion to preach and teach to those whom the Lord had extended grace. We can see the love Paul had toward the brethren. This message was not a message to the general public, but to those to whom the arm of the Lord had been revealed, Isaiah 53:1. Paul told those in Rome that he longed to see them, that he and they could be comforted together in this gospel of the Son of God. He was ready to impart spiritual fruit in the form of preaching the gospel to this people. Not only was his to impart to others, but he would also desire fruit from among them v13. Paul was a man who needed grace just as much as the next. He desired the fellowship of his brethren just as we do. Those who preached should not be elevated above any other. Look at the words of Jesus in Matthew 11:
Matthew 11:11 Verily I say unto you, Among them that are born of women there hath not risen a greater than John the Baptist: notwithstanding he that is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.
This verse here is to point out that even a man as great as the John the Baptist who was chosen to pave the way for the coming Messiah, even he if left to his own righteousness is far less than the lowliest of saints in heaven. We all struggle during this life. We all have a desperate need for the righteousness of another. Paul saw his need, as well as the needs of other believers. He desired the fellowship of those of like faith, those who embraced the faith of Christ. Those who God had revealed the truth of the sovereign grace of God in saving a people by the work/obedience unto death of our Lord Jesus Christ. Paul desired the comforting words of those who looked to another for salvation.
